IveGot1 is a mobile application that enables users to identify and report invasive animals and plants in Florida. Developed by the University of Georgia Center for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health in collaboration with the National Park Service, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and University of Florida Center for Aquatic and Invasive Plants, IveGot1 leverages the capabilities of EDDMapS to streamline the process of submitting observations directly from the field using an iPhone. These reports are then uploaded to EDDMapS and forwarded to local and state verifiers for evaluation.
Florida, with over 85 million visitors annually, not only attracts tourists but also invasive species that pose a threat to its ecosystem. The intrusion of these non-native plants and animals can have severe repercussions, including adverse effects on native wildlife, agricultural productivity, and public health. The economic impact of invasive species in Florida exceeds $500 million per year, in addition to the significant ecological consequences. With more than 1.7 million acres of natural areas already infested by invasive species, it is crucial to address this issue promptly.
By encouraging individuals to report sightings of invasive species, IveGot1 aims to enhance our understanding of infestations and prevent the escalation of problems like melaleuca or Burmese pythons. The application simplifies the process of identification and reporting, enabling users to submit real-time submissions with location data and images. Users can utilize IveGot1 both online and offline, with the flexibility to store reports on their device for later submission.
Key features of IveGot1 include detailed information on Florida's most concerning non-native invasive animals and plants, interactive point distribution maps based on the user's location, as well as opportunities to engage with organizations such as the Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council and Cooperative Invasive Species Management Areas (CISMA) through the Florida Invasive Species Partnership.
Powered by EDDMapS, a comprehensive Early Detection and Distribution Mapping System developed by the University of Georgia Center for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health, IveGot1 provides a valuable tool for monitoring invasive species occurrences through real-time tracking and reporting functionalities.
